I welcome immigration and immigrants for the most part - as others have pointed out migrants have made Australia what it is today - a stable, thriving, prosperous Democratic country. Skilled immigration is a fantastic idea, if we have a desperate shortage of Doctors for example, giving immigration preference to foreign doctors is a win/win solution. However I feel in 2014 Australia skilled immigration is being misused by large corporations and the Government (both the current and previous). I believe that instead of educating and developing Australians to fill gaps in the economy, we are using skilled immigrants instead, as quite simply it's cheaper. Businesses get to pay less for their worker, and the government doesn't need to pay for their education. That is a lose/lose for this country. I should note this is not a knock on skilled immigrants - they're offered the opportunity to come work and live in a great country, who wouldn't take it up. I'm all for skilled immigration where there is a genuine need for it - I'm not one of those people saying

but it should only ever be viewed as a stop gap measure to fulfill a shortfall until local supply can meet demand. If there is a series of similar occupations on the list(Page onimmi. gov. au), that should be a sign to us that something needs to be done to ensure more young Australians have the opportunity to seek those types of jobs in the future. If you look at the list we seem to have a huge gap when it comes to Engineers, I would hope this means the government is funding more spaces for Engineering courses at Uni and making an effort to promote the field to potential students. But some of the occupations on the list are ridiculous... Secondary School teachers - I have many friends in this field who've been doing it for years and still have to live 12 month contract to 12 month contract - indeed some of them can't find anything more than temp replacement work - we absolutely do not need to import teachers when locally trained teachers can't find sufficient work. Special Needs Teachers - again I know Australians who can't find full time work in this field - so why import them? There are heaps of tradie type positions on the list.. Locksmith, Welder, Electrician, Carpenter, Joiner. At the same time we persist with a broken apprenticeship system, and we cut the budgets of vocational learning institutions. Some sources put youth unemployment in Australia at 20% Australia's youth unemployment rates on the rise these are the types of jobs we should be promoting to that 20% and we should support them in seeking those roles with more apprenticeships etc. So, I'm not a fan of the system used to bring skilled migrants into Australia at the moment. That should be detached from my view of the migrants them self who add tremendous value to the country. Some Australians may not be able to separate the two, which at times can lead to resentment against the most visible manifestation of the flawed policy, the skilled migrants them self.
